Remember that off-the-hook idea I was talking about a couple of days ago about making lists? Well, I decided to power through with it. This is an introduction to the experiment which will be known from then on as:

The Moppet Lists (A Social Experiment)

I plagiarized this from the movie The Bucket List (starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) with a few quirky changes. I’ve watched it four times in the last two weeks and have become hopelessly addicted (It has been recently awarded a spot in my Fab Movies Hall of Fame). The concept is more or less the same.

Hey, a little heads up. I just graduated from highschool (I do a little jig here). It’s absolutely liberating. Don’t get me wrong. I feel quite sad about leaving my home outside of home (school, I mean) after 13 years, but the fact that I actually braved through that teenage jungle is amazing. I feel like I should be given a title or something.

For the record,  I graduated on a Saturday, March 28, 2009 at about 6:00 in the evening in our school’s chapel.

And after we made our exit from the chapel, when all my batchmates were breaking down and hugging each other as if someone was dying of salmonella, I did not cry - or so I’ve convinced myself. I dare anyone to challenge that (I can be a total jerk/bad-ass now that I’ve graduated. It’s not like they can take back my diploma or something. Brilliant, no?)

I’m going into the third week of summer vacation and I am positively bored out of my mind. There’s nothing else to look forward to except Facebook (which, let’s face it, is nothing more but a direct consequence of the boredom I will be dying from). I have read and reread all the books I have. I feel like a sack of potatoes, and no one wants any more french fries.

YPPC – Iloilo

(Young People for Positive Change)

To celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the EDSA Revolution, we, the high school student leaders of Assumption-Iloilo, Ateneo de Iloilo - Santa Maria Catholic School andWestbridge School for Boys through our student councils, would like to share our thoughts on the state of our country. Even if the bloodless revolution symbolizes thePhilippines’ freedom from a dictator, it also tells us of the search for a good leader.

The national elections in 2010 will give us another chance to elect officials. A new group of voters, the youth, will have the chance to exercise the right of suffrage. So, we came together and resolved to let our voices be heard.

Young People on Politics

Making the Right Choice

Quite recently, much talk has been buzzing around regarding the 2010 Presidential Election. A number of politicians have cited their intentions to run for the President seat, and dozens of posters have sprung up in many cities throughout our country. It is also important to note that one year from now, a fresh batch of young voters will exercise for the first time their constitutional right to vote. As such, many of the “presidentiables” have focused their campaigns toward this voting group.

Previous elections, such as the recent one in the United States, have shown that the youth vote plays a significant role in deciding the winner. Now that they have the power to change the country right in the palm of their hands, many young voters are eagerly waiting for the day when they would line up and cast their ballot. Yes, they may know how to vote, but they may not know who to pick.

One of the problems many voters face is choosing a right leader. Sometimes, the line between truth and lies gets blurred, and it gets really hard to vote for the deserving candidate. So, the knowledge of the qualities that make a good leader should not only be known by leaders and candidates but also by voters and citizens as well.

Obviously, there are many qualities that make up a good leader. However, we believe that there are four of these that stand out among the rest. A good leader must be:

  • Charismatic – There is a saying that goes that “no man is an island”. As such, politicians cannot lead the country by themselves. They need the help of the citizens. There is always strength in numbers. A charismatic leader has the ability to rally the populace into one single cause, and unite the nation in times of crisis. Quoting from John F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, “When we are united, there is much to do; when not, there is nothing we can do.”
  • Firm – Leaders are elected to lead. However this is not the case in many sectors of our government. Many politicians are easily influenced by external elements whenever they would make decisions. We need leaders who are firm in their decision making. They must be the ones to lead and let others follow. In the kind of world that we live in today, weaklings have no place to exist in a society.
  • Honest – Dishonesty is the root of all the corruption in our country. Therefore, the solution is honesty. A lot of corrupt politicians are stupid enough to believe that many of us Filipinos are so ignorant, that we believe their lies in the radio and on TV. Quite frankly, we’re not. Honest leaders are those who make sure that what they say will always be what they do.
  • Virtuous – Virtue is perhaps the most important aspect of a good leader. Why? It is because every other good thing will follow if and only if the leader is virtuous. If virtues are the foundation of a good human being, then virtuous leaders are the foundation of a good society. Evil begets evil and goodness begets goodness. A good leader will foster a good society while a bad leader will most certainly lead it to ruin.

Although most of the responsibility in improving and changing our country lies with the politicians, we citizens share a part of it to. Since we live in a democracy, we are the ones who truly hold the power. Without us, the politicians are nothing. Who else would be the ones whom they would lead? This is why many candidates invest so much time, money and effort just to get votes. It is said in the Bible that “a bad tree bears bad fruit and a good tree bears good fruit”.  Since we will cast our votes in the next election, we must make sure that those whom we elect into office are good trees. Whether we like it or not, we are going to have to deal with the next batch politicians for the next few years of our lives. We might as well make these years worth living by voting for the right leaders. One Election Day could make such an impact that would affect us for the rest of our lives.

More Tarps?

Politics, true enough, will never mean the same without the fancy suits and cars, the megaphones and prank-like advertisements, the rivalries and all of this sort that can simply be placed under one hilarious term: fuss.

However, questions still remain, especially on an occasion like EDSA, when will we really take this seriously? What, or who should we really be looking into as people capable of the biggest job in the nation?

Honestly, at this point it may be unfair to make judgements. But at least we should know what kind of person we want to have. And to all the readers: what is this really all about? Everywhere we see “Register Now and be Counted!” by whoever for the whatever position. Nothing can be seen that is actually about these people. Since the last elections, everything has been more of a popularity contest, no one dared much to explain what he/she would really do.

And as we know that none of us could really know what could be done when you are in the palace, we should at least make sure that what we want to happen to this country is fought for by our voted candidate.

Yet again, fought for seems to be so odd to describe.

Simply put, then, we need a leader that fills the tarpaulins not with his face, but with what he can do. That does not only speak of what he can do, with all the college degrees he/ she may have attained outside and the like, but had really been proven to do it even in the outside world. Enough of the wisetalk, we don’t need it! We need a practical leader, who does what he says he will do and makes sure they happen well. We need a leader who truly cares for this country and what happens to it. We need someone that can face the world and change the way everyone looks at the Philippines.

Point is we don’t need a typical politician, we literally need someone who won’t care about his/her face but will care about the face of the street where his/her tarpaulin is posted. We need someone who will inspire by example. And even so, many would say that this is such a dreamy line of thought, but if Ninoy Aquino existed and there was good in him, is it so impossible to find another good man out there?

A president will take charge of the problem and solve it, we’re still balancing at the negative trillions right now and we are just looking at it. A true hero wouldn’t stand the reason it can’t be solved. We know PGMA is working very hard, but we also know she can’t be there beyond 2010 anymore. Again, the point is: as we commemorate EDSA, let’s remember that 23 years ago, a man lived and loved his country, can’t we find a man like that now? Is it impossible, or are we just so closed-minded?

We have to start reading beyond the digitally printed lines these days and know who we’re writing down in the ballot. The only way to believe in one’s choices is if you know they are sincere. But do we, as an entire nation, totally know the president we have even after 8 years of her on that high seat?

It’s time to choose wisely, not critically however. Because we can never find the spirit of Ninoy if we don’t look for it, if we don’t appreciate the good in each candidate’s hearts.

From Our Point of View

Twenty-three years have passed since the bloodless revolution took place but the meaning and significance of that action still echo today. It not only spoke of the Filipinos’ freedom but also rid our country of a tyrant. It expressed the plea for an upright government to be established in order to mend the mistakes of the past.

Now, we may not see any improvements from our dismal political landscape but the 2010 Elections give us another chance to elect officials who will transform our country positively.

We believe that the elections present us with an opportunity to promote good governance. Solving our problems will not be an overnight activity but it requires time. Still, electing a knowledgeable and skilled President will give us a chance to see good governance come into play.

Good governance will establish discipline among the citizens. Government leaders can give good examples to each other and to the future leaders who will take their places. Efficient and honest leadership will motivate the followers to be upright and law-abiding citizens. This is what we call leadership by example. By next year, a new President will be sitting in the office of Malacañang. It is important that the citizens of this country elect a president who will lead not only the people but other government officials as well. We believe that corruption can be lessened if the highest-ranking official, that is, the President, sets a good example for his or her fellow public officials to follow.

Good governance will give this country hope. The youth can give this country hope. We, Filipinos, have the skills to become effective leaders. The thing is, we just lack the discipline of self-control once we assume that great responsibility of leading society. In the coming 2010 Elections, hundreds of thousands of the youth will add to the country’s current voting population. These new voters will represent the voice of the young, their opinions, particularly on who deserve to become the nation’s leaders. And as the country’s future leaders, we also believe that we can promise succeeding generation a better tomorrow. We, the youth, understand what is going on in this country. We also want to stop it. And in the best way we can, we believe that we are capable of contributing for the better change.

In the same way, as part of the youth, we hope that these words can somehow prove that we do understand and that we do care. We hope that in some way, the opinions that we have freely expressed here will make a difference.

We hope that our messages will help you reflect on your choices for the Elections. We may not be able to vote now, but in a few years, we will. For now, we place our hopes on you – that you’ll be able to put competent leaders in office. After all, our future lies on the choices that you make. We hope that through this paper, choosing the names you will write in your ballot will be easier and more meaningful.

I've lived in Iloilo City for the past 16 years, yet this was the first time I actually roamed the streets during the Dinagyang celebration.

Melai and I emotionally prepared ourselves for this (HAHA).

As I said in my previous lomo album, I damaged most of my F2 shots. But I've properly mourned for them. At least my Vivitar pictures turned out alright.

These were shot during my last Intramural Week in highschool.

Unfortunately, I had a lot of badly lit photos. Take it from me, don't use Ektachrome 64 when the sun isn't shining. I learned that the hard way. I'm quite happy with my silhouette pictures though. I was afraid I wouldn't get the effect I wanted.

P.S.
To my over-enthusiastic models, Thank-you :)

Mom and I went to an art exposition in Tita Luth's house yesterday. The organizers gathered a mix of renowned and emerging Ilonggo artists to sell their masterpieces to the highest bidder (Well, to any willing buyer anyway. The pieces are already pre-priced). Half of the proceeds are to go to the renovation of the plaza in Villa.

There are about 7 artists' works (was it 7? I'll get back to you on that one) on display, and it will be running 'til the 13th or 14th of February (I'm not a hundred percent sure about the date. I'll check).

I got to rub shoulders with artiste-s :))

Note: The pictures I have in this album aren't even half of the items on sale. Also, the artists I tagged in this album aren't complete. Shoot me, I forgot their names.

I finally have my lomo shots! These shots were taken from my Fisheye 2 and Ate Tiff's Vivitar IC 100 (Thank you a gazillion times for letting me borrow!)

The films I used weren't as nice, but I'm pretty satisfied with the oucome. I got my 3 color slides cross-processed for curiosity's sake. Not bad, eh?

Films:
Lucky Color 200
Solid Gold 200
Konica Centuria Chrome 200

I can't wait to try the X-pro slides Ate Tiff gave me. Oh, and I'm getting my own Vivitar and cheap flash. Brilliant, no? Lomography's pretty expensive (FILMS: Gasp!) especially since I'm still living off my parents, but it's well worth it. I'm saving (starving, more like) up for a Holga.

Unless, of course, someone there wants to buy me one (Chev *cough* and Dodge *cough*).

Here are pictures with the Ballada family (my mom's sister's family). The first shots are from lunch at our place. The rest were taken from our little trip to Angelicum.

One of my cousins lives in Bacolod with his family and they spent Christmas here in Iloilo City. His kids (Enzo, 5, and Evie, 3) are amazing. They say and do the funniest things. Plus, they're wickedly smart. Evie sang with us (and in tune, FYI). Enzo decided he wanted to become a judge like Mom. He kept asking all of us what accuse meant. I had a kick out of my brothers' answers (which took them a long time to properly phrase). When we went to Smallville for coffee, there was a dessert named Atonement, and so he kept asking everyone what that meant. When we gave him a decent answer (atonement is synonymous to "saying sorry"), he gave a confident smile and said, "I'm a genius!". Whereas, Evie ate a whole serving of tiramisu all on her own without blinking. And it tasted like it had a little bit of rum in it. Also, when we passed by CPU (from Angelicum), Enzo said that he didn't want to go down and look at the lights because the place looked like a hospital.

They make me wonder when I'll have nephews and nieces - from my two elder brothers (wink-wink).

You have got to watch this vid. I dunno how many of you are familiar with SNC, but those of you who do know them know how amazing these men are. Quartets/Quintets are way overrated compared to these guys.

So, here's my tribute to the holidays. Enjoy :D

Blog EntryDeck The Halls, SuckersDec 20, '08 11:45 PM
for everyone

Happy Christmas, folks.

In lieu of the yuletide glee, I am cooking up plans to tidy my sty of a room. Unfortunately, I think it's beyond help at this point. My bags are strewn all over the floor at the point where I have to tiptoe to avoid squishing whatever is inside them. My clothes are piling up on my tabletops. I can't find my undeveloped and/or unused films, and Manang Agnes stuffed the whole lot of my magazines inside my cabinet. It's depressing really; how have I come to this point? I used to think I had OCD when I all I really had was a delirious bout of I-think-I'm-responsible complex. Well, now that's down the drain.

I am devoid of Christmas cheer. It's depressing. I have no phone (I lost it two weeks ago. Brilliant, eh?), no funds for shopping (I can't even blame the damn economy. Apparently the Philippines is more stable than the rest of the world.), and no definite vacation plans. I sound shallow, huh? Sue me.

I feel so bad for not being at our school's Christmas Fellowship yesterday. If I had a buck for every time I overslept, I'd be filthy loaded. I miss my Nanay and Tatay. And Mary Rose. And their extended family. I did pray for them. Still, it would have been good to see them again.

On a lighter note, my brothers are arriving tomorrow from Manila. Chev won't be around 'til Christmas morning though (Hey, what the hell is up with that? You'll reek of airplane stink when you get here. Ugh).

My friends and I have been on a DVD spree lately. I think I've watched enough chick flicks to last me... well, another month (I'm a girl, dammit). Here are a few titles that will help kill time:

  • The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants 2
  • The Clique
  • Picture This
  • Wild Child

I'd tell you who stars in them, but that would just show how uncool I am. I'd rather you figure that one out by yourself.

GG Spoiler alert. I friggin' hate Jenny Humphrey. FEELER ah. Nate? Seriously. How challenged are you? How old are you again? Five?!!

I still haven't started watching Heroes Season 3. I have 5 episodes totally rotting in my PC. But it's the holidays, and I'm a natural bum. I know I'll find time especially if all that's in my schedule is watching tv and pigging out on holiday ham.

The Academy Is... has a new album! Fast Times at Barrington High (Released August 19, 2008 through Fueled by Ramen. Check out Wikipedia for more info) It's amazing, if I say so myself. Plus, AAR (The All-American Rejects) has a new album (When The Wolrd Comes Down), too. I finally got a decent torrent, so I'm downloading it now. I already heard their single Gives You Hell, and I loved it. Tyson Ritter is one cool dude.

For all you TBS fans, they will be releasing their fourth album next year! It will be called New Again. So, that's something to look forward to in 2009. I've been waiting for their new album for ages. I'm a bit disappointed that it took 'em three years to come up with it, but I guess all artists have their quirks.

Hey, if you're looking for old punk/pop rock songs, try getting the whole Punk Goes ... albums. I finally got all 7 albums complete. They're all a year to 8 years old, but still well worth it. I hear there will be a Punk Goes Pop 2 out next year, but my source is still a bit shady about it.

I'm re-reading Twilight and Midnight Sun simultaneously. Sucker, I know.

I got to go. Easy on the parties, dudes. We don't want to all look bloated. Santa-size doesn't come easy - or so I hear. Trivia: Obesity (childhood or otherwise) goes through the roof (err.. chimney?) in December.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Mr. Harry is a mean old grouch, in every sense of the word. He hates everything and everyone - even those he has never met before. He's a hermit who plans to drink booze for the rest of eternity. Can a man really be so vile and heartless? Or has life just been too cuel to him? Did he once have hopes? Dreams? Loves? What makes a man lose sight of everything beautiful in the world?

Special thanks to Manong Bogart for agreeing to a cameo role in this video.

Mrs. Rebecca is good-natured and cheerful. But denial manifests itself in strange ways. A smile is never what it seems. People are never really what they seem.

This was shot in our school's dormitory. A dozen thank-you's to Ms. Lizares for allowing us to disrupt her lunch period. To the dormers, I hope we didn't botch up your beds and personal belongings.

VideoMax & Sam (The Flashback)Dec 6, '08 8:17 AM
for everyone
I'm uploading the video flashbacks we used for our English play (entitled "The People You Meet In Limbo" based on Albom's The Five People You Meet In Heaven). This one's the flashback of the twins (Maximillian and Samantha).

Many thanks to my faaatt brother for hooking me up with the video-editing program (which was not his software of choice).

Enjoy, folks :)

Max and Sam bicker like fowls in a cockpit. They agree on nothing and argue about everything. But is it possible that behind the many spats are amazing acts of heroism and sacrifice? How far would you go for the people you love?
